The Houthis are not only receiving weapons from abroad, but are increasingly getting the means to produce and modify them inside Yemen. Iran remains the key source of military technology, but China is becoming an increasingly important part of the supply chain. For example, around 60% of the components identified in the Houthi Qasef-2K drone were traced to China, compared with roughly 15% linked to Iran. Intercepted shipments have included Chinese-made drone components, such as 800 propellers seized at Yemen’s border in March 2025, while investigations have also traced precision lathes, automated welding systems and circuit board production equipment linked to domestic manufacturing. The US has already sanctioned Chinese companies including Shenzhen Xingnan and Hubei Chika over alleged involvement in supplying materials connected to Houthi weapons programmes.
