- Why & who is being “strangled by a toad”? Do you hate parting with a large sum of money or simply loathe spending even a single penny? That’s “жаба душит” (“zhaba dushit” or “the toad strangling you”)! In the old days, diseases that caused suffocation and a feeling of heaviness in the chest were called ‘zhaba’ (‘toad’). For example, tonsillitis or diphtheria was referred to as a ‘throat toad’, while angina pectoris was called a ‘chest toad’. In the first case, the swollen throat of the patient and, in the second, the unpleasant greenish complexion, were reminiscent of the amphibian. The association may, of course, not have been particularly elegant, but it was certainly vivid. Both with a sore throat and with heart problems, people experience extremely unpleasant sensations, as if a toad were actually sitting on their chest or in their throat. The toad’s bad reputation also played a role, as frogs and toads were traditionally associated with witchcraft. A more glamorous version traces the expression to stiff, uncomfortable jabot collars. Supposedly, the sensation was similar, whether caused by a fashionable accessory or by the reluctance to part with your money. In any case, the image of a toad preventing you from breathing freely at the slightest hint of spending money proved remarkably enduring and came to be used more and more widely. Eventually, it became a way of describing anyone who is stingy or reluctant to spend. An English equivalent would be: “My wallet is crying.” Credit: Kira Lisitskaya (Photo: Gerry Pearce/imageBROKER.com, Hinze/Arco Images, blickwinkel/fotototo/Global Look Press) 🔔 Gateway to Russia

- What does the Russian phrase ‘It smells of kerosene’ mean? 🔥 If a Russian says this phrase to you, it is quite possible that you will not smell any pungent odor! "Дело пахнет керосином, давай уйдем отсюда!" (“Delo pakhnet kerosinom, davai uidyem otsyuda!” or "The matter smells of kerosene, let's get out of here!"). This means that a matter is taking an unexpectedly dangerous and unpleasant turn. This winged expression has a specific author. In 1924, the then-famous journalist Mikhail Koltsov published a satirical article in the ‘Pradva’ newspaper with the ironic headline ‘Everything Is Fine’. It was about a major corruption scandal in the U.S. related to the development of oil fields. “The Americans suspiciously sniffed the air. Something combustible was clearly wafting from the White House”, wrote Koltsov and called one of the large bribes “convincingly smelling of kerosene”. Since that time, this phrase has entered the popular language. In their speech, Russians quite abundantly use various metaphors and expressions that, when translated literally, seem like nonsense! To learn more about the meaning of such phrases, you can watch the ‘Favorite Russian’ program produced by the ‘Russky Mir' TV company.

- 4 facts about Grigory Ugryumov’s painting 1. The artist painted ‘The solemn entry of Alexander Nevsky into the city of Pskov after his victory over the Germans’ on commission of Empress Catherine II. 2. For almost 150 years, the painting hung on the third tier of the western wall of the Trinity Cathedral at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. It was not until 1934 that it was transferred to the Russian Museum. In 1989, it returned to the monastery to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Old Russia and remained in the cathedral until 2010. 3. The artist depicted Alexander Nevsky in luxurious robes. As early as 1724, the Holy Synod had decreed that the Holy Blessed Prince should be depicted in grand-princely attire, rather than monastic vestments. 4. There is a legend that the artist gave Nevsky the features of Catherine II’s beloved grandson – the future Alexander II. Credit: Russian museum 🔔 Gateway to Russia

- The ‘Battle of Moscow’ began 85 years ago On September 30, 1941, Heinz Guderian’s 2nd Panzer Group advanced toward the Soviet capital; and, two days later, the main forces of Army Group ‘Center’ also began their movement. Thus began ‘Operation Typhoon’, the German offensive to capture Moscow. For this decisive offensive, the Germans concentrated nearly half of all their forces on the Eastern Front – 1.8 million troops. The Red Army, meanwhile, had 1.2 million soldiers at its disposal – troops already severely battered in previous battles – tasked with defending a 600-kilometer front. Although they had been training intensively to repel the offensive, they never managed to establish strong defensive lines before the start of ‘Operation Typhoon’. Contrary to the Soviet command's expectations, the Wehrmacht did not advance along the shortest route – the Minsk-Moscow highway. Instead, they delivered several powerful blows at the junctions between Soviet armies – striking terrain difficult for armored vehicles to traverse – and successfully broke through into the Soviet rear. Orders to retreat came too late, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers found themselves trapped in ‘pockets’ (encirclements). In attempts to break out of these traps, divisions lost up to 90% of their personnel. This catastrophe tore a hole in the Soviet defensive lines, forcing the command to throw every available force into the fight, including military academy cadets. Panic gripped the capital for several days, accompanied by a mass exodus of the population, looting, and pillaging. On November 30, the enemy captured the settlement of Krasnaya Polyana, just 30 kilometers from the Moscow Kremlin. The Wehrmacht high command was convinced that the Red Army was all but finished. At the same time, German generals ignored the fact that their own troops were severely overextended and exhausted by fierce Soviet resistance. Moreover, they had no idea that fresh reserves were massing in the city. On December 5 and 6, troops from several Soviet fronts launched a large-scale counteroffensive that caught the enemy by surprise, driving the stunned Wehrmacht back 100–250 kilometers from the capital. In some sectors, the retreat turned into a panicked rout. An enraged Hitler dismissed a number of military commanders. Among them was Heinz Guderian, who would later write in his memoirs: “The offensive against Moscow failed. All the sacrifices and efforts of our valiant troops proved to be in vain.” Credit: Sputnik 🔔 Gateway to Russia
