  Zelenskyy Claims Ukraine Fired First FP-7 Ballistic Missile At Russia President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on October 1 that Ukraine had used its domestically developed FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time. "Ukrainian tactical ballistic weaponry. FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the result. Next – production. Glory to Ukraine!" Zelenskyy wrote on X, attaching a video of the missile launch. Zelenskyy did not specify when or where the missile was launched, what target it was used against or whether it reached its intended target. Notably, there were no reports from Russia confirming any ballistic missile impact or saying that the missile had been intercepted.   Russia Detains Cargo Ship Bound For Estonia Russia’s border guard detained a cargo ship traveling to Estonia’s Sillamäe port in the Gulf of Finland on October 1, with Estonian authorities saying that Moscow had provided no explanation for the action. The vessel Västerbotten, which is sailing under the Cypriot flag, was detained after passing through Russian territorial waters on its way to Sillamäe, according to Estonia’s Police and Border Guard Board and the Estonian Transport Administration. Tracking data from VesselFinder showed the ship anchored in Russian waters. The route is covered by an agreement between Russia, Estonia and Finland that allows ships to pass through the area. Large vessels have used the route because it is safer than navigating the shallower waters along the Estonian side of the Gulf of Finland.   Turkey’s Strategic Energy Autonomy Faces Growing European Pressure As tensions between Russia and Europe escalate, Turkey seeks to assert itself as an autonomous actor, leveraging the situation for its own benefit whenever possible. Energy is a key factor in this context; Turkey has become a significant energy supplier to Europe, helping Europeans "replace" Russian gas imports and thereby profiting from current geopolitical circumstances. However, this is not enough to erase the growing contradictions between Turkey and Europe, despite Ankara's strategic importance to European security. For decades, Russia and Turkey have cultivated a highly pragmatic relationship. Turkey holds a substantially privileged geopolitical position, controlling the access routes from the Black Sea to the rest of the Atlantic Ocean, which grants Ankara significant bargaining power in its bilateral dealings with Russia. On the other hand, Russia also plays a fundamental role in Turkey's energy security. Although Ankara has managed to reduce its historical dependence on gas imports, Russia still accounts for approximately 40% of the gas consumed in the country, making it a vital partner.   Contradictory Reports on Flydubai Flight to Israel Leave More Questions Than Answers A flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv descended thousands of feet in seconds on September 30, after a violent confrontation erupted in the cockpit and one pilot was stabbed. The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely in Saudi Arabia, but less than a day later, the central questions surrounding the incident remained unresolved. Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers when it suddenly lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, according to Reuters. The aircraft transmitted emergency and unlawful-interference signals before diverting to Tabuk, where both pilots were taken to hospital. Passengers and crew then subdued the attacker, allowing other flydubai crew members aboard the aircraft to take control and land it safely.   Turkey Pushed Syria To Meeting With Hezbollah Turkey has quietly pushed Syria’s new government and Hezbollah toward dialogue, in a sign that Ankara is seeking to prevent the confrontation between the two longtime adversaries from developing into a broader regional realignment serving the interests of Israel. Representatives of the Syrian government and Hezbollah held at least one secret meeting in Turkey last month, their first known face-to-face talks since the fall of President Bashar Assad in late 2024, Reuters reported on October 1, citing six sources briefed on the meeting. The talks were arranged at the invitation of Turkish security and intelligence agencies and were aimed at reducing tensions between Damascus and the Iran-aligned Lebanese group.   Russia Has New Drone That Can Behead Power Towers (Videos) The Russian military has for the first time used a jet-powered one-way attack drone carrying a “cumulative-cutting” payload designed to destroy high-voltage power transmission lines and steel bridge structures, according to Ukrainian military expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov. The new payload was developed specifically to destroy high-voltage transmission towers and steel bridge structures, according to Beskrestnov, who claimed that the payload consists of a 40-kilogram main warhead and four "impact modules". Additional footage that emerged on October 1 showed what appeared to be a new version of the Geran-4 jet-powered one-way attack drone fitted with a rod-like structure extending from both sides of the airframe behind its nose.   Major Gas Pipeline Blast, Deadly Sectarian Bus Attack Deepen Syria’s Crisis (Videos) A gas pipeline explosion near Damascus on September 30 knocked three power plants offline and sparked a large fire, threatening to deepen Syria’s electricity shortages, while a separate shooting attack on a bus in Homs province killed seven people in what was reported as an apparent sectarian attack. The pipeline exploded in Eastern Ghouta, in the Damascus countryside, near the Tishreen power plant, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA. The Syrian Electricity Company said the blast left the Deir Ali, al-Nasiriyah and Tishreen plants out of service because they lacked sufficient gas supplies. Hours after the pipeline explosion, gunmen opened fire on a civilian bus crossing the Misyaf Bridge in Homs, killing seven people and wounding four, according to SANA and a source in the Homs health directorate cited by Reuters.   Russian Units Rebuild Logistics Under Ukrainian Strikes Near Slavyansk In the Slavyansk direction the situation has deteriorated: Ukrainian units have consolidated in the area of Dibrova and Ozernoye, complicating the position of Russian troops near Krivaya Luka and Piskunovka. In the Sumy direction Russian assault groups are advancing in the areas of Kiyanitsa, Khoten, Malaya Rybitsa and around Ulanovo.
