— To the uninformed and so-called political experts out there, there is no “left” in Paraguay. There is only a split within the country’s dominant political faction: Honor Colorado, led by Horacio Cartes; and Colorado Añetete, led by Mario Abdo Benítez. Both have united against Santiago Peña.
Now, Vice President and successor Pedro Alliana will continue along the lines of Honor Colorado, while Añetete will remain focused on safeguarding the new office and forging important alliances with other dissident factions.
Only Brazil stands to gain from this dispute, as the departure of a technocratic president could influence business operations involving the Itaipu Dam.
