How to spot a scam Telegram channel

Fake reviews, urgency, closed comments, “guaranteed income”, a brand-new channel with a huge audience — the signs of a scam and how to check a channel against its stats in a minute.

A scam channel almost always looks more convincing than an honest one: more subscribers than its neighbours in the topic, smooth glowing reviews and a very simple offer. That is not an accident but a design: trust there is bought the same way as subscribers — in bulk.

No single sign below is a verdict on its own. But three or four of them on one channel are reason enough not to send money or follow links until you have checked its stats. How to check is at the end.

1. A large audience on a young channel

The channel is two months old and has a hundred thousand subscribers. A living audience does not gather like that: honest growth is many small steps, while bought growth arrives as a single step in one day. The channel's creation date sits on its card in «The channel in numbers» block, and the subscriber chart for the month is above it.

Steps are more common than they seem: on September 10, 2026, out of 2,811 channels with a full score, 242 showed subscriber spikes.

A separate trace is growth with no cause. The channel barely posts, yet subscribers arrive every day in an even line: more readers, and nothing to read.

2. Views that do not match subscribers

The cheapest thing to fake is the subscriber count; views cost more to fake, and reactions and forwards cost more still. That is why the numbers are read together. A hundred thousand subscribers and a thousand views per post means a thousand readers, not a hundred thousand. And the other way round: more views than subscribers with zero forwards means a post that «everyone saw, plus as many again», yet nobody passed on.

What to compare with depends on the channel's size and topic: benchmarks by category are collected in the table of norms in the channel statistics guide. On a tg.place card the average views per post and their share of subscribers sit in the first row, next to the subscriber count — the mismatch is visible without a calculator.

3. Closed comments and reactions without words

A channel with nothing to hide rarely closes the discussion. A scam channel nearly always does: one unhappy comment under a post about «signals» breaks the whole shop window. If comments are open, look at who writes them: identical accounts with no photo and no history, interchangeable thank-yous, and admin replies only to the enthusiastic ones.

Reactions can be bought too. The sign is the same number of reactions under every post, regardless of topic and time, and almost no forwards: bots react, but they do not share.

4. Reviews that cannot be checked

Screenshots of chats and bank statements, photos of stacks of cash, «a student made this in a week» — all of it is drawn in minutes. A review is worth something only if it was left by a person who can be found, in a place the channel itself does not control.

That is why on a tg.place channel card a review is left by a registered user and checked by our editors, and the channel owner can reply to it but can neither edit it nor take it down. There are still few reviews in the catalog, so an empty block on a particular channel proves nothing on its own. What should worry you is something else: thousands of happy customers who exist only inside the channel itself and nowhere else.

5. Urgency and limited seats

«Three seats left», «entry closes today», «the price goes up at midnight» — a trick that works in any market, and in Telegram especially: the decision has to be made before you have had time to open the channel's stats. Any offer that will vanish while you are checking it can safely be skipped.

6. Guaranteed income and private «VIP» channels

Income cannot be guaranteed — not on an exchange, not in betting, not in arbitrage. A channel that promises it is selling not a method but access: a paid private channel, «VIP signals», «personal guidance». The scheme is always the same: the free channel shows only the winning calls and deletes the losing ones, while the paid one lives until the first wave of unhappy customers and reopens under a new name.

A name change shows on a tg.place card too: for thirty days after a rename, the previous name stays in the title next to the current one.

7. A single contact, prepayment and a move to DMs

You are asked to send money to a private person's card or wallet, with no contract and no way to cancel; all communication moves quickly into private messages, where there are no witnesses; a «manager» writes first and insists on a decision today. Any one of these three steps is a reason to stop; all three together are a reason to leave.

How to check a channel in a minute

Open the channel's card in the catalog — by name, or by pasting its t.me link into the search on the home page. Look at three things: the creation date and the subscriber chart for the month (a step instead of a slope is a spike), the share of views from subscribers against the category benchmark, and reactions with forwards. Then the reviews block and the channel's position in its category.

If the channel is not in the catalog, that is neither an excuse nor evidence: the catalog does not include everything. But a channel that sells access to money usually has reasons to stay out of places where it can be compared with its neighbours.

What each number means and where the signs of bought growth come from is covered in two neighbouring guides of the Academy.

If the money is already sent

First, your bank or payment service: report the transfer to the scammer right away — in some cases a transfer can be disputed, and the chance is higher in the first hours. Second, a report to the police with saved screenshots of the conversation, the payment details and a link to the channel. Third, a report on the channel in Telegram itself, through «Report» in the channel menu.

None of these steps guarantees getting the money back, and promising that would be the very trick this guide is about. But each of them lowers the chance that the next person falls into the same funnel.
