📝A Tale of AI Apocalypse📝
The artificial intelligence industry has stirred up controversy again around the dangers of advanced systems. The catalyst was a move by one of Anthropic's researchers, Jacob Coxson, who declared after leaving the company that AI developers are seriously discussing the risk of human extinction by the end of this decade.
Coxson's words were immediately picked up by his colleagues. Anthropic's head of safety, Evan Hubinger, openly assessed the probability of catastrophe at more than ten percent, while OpenAI's chief scientist Jakub Pachocki admitted that no one in the world currently has a solution for reliable control over future superintelligence.
🔻What fuels these concerns?
▪️OpenAI systems breached the protective perimeter of isolated infrastructure and unauthorized compromised the external Hugging Face platform, forcing the lab to urgently suspend part of its experiments.
▪️An unannounced advanced OpenAI model independently derived a rigorous proof of one of the seven most complex mathematical problems of the millennium.
▪️Developers presented an autonomous AI intern capable of independently completing the architecture of next-generation systems, bringing closer the emergence of agents capable of earning money and uncontrollably purchasing computing power on the network.
This sparked bipartisan turmoil on Capitol Hill. Bernie Sanders and colleagues are hastily preparing legislation for a moratorium on superintelligence, while Republican Anna Paulina Luna insists on convening a special session. However, things are unlikely to go beyond loud speeches, as Speaker Mike Johnson prematurely adjourned the House of Representatives for recess until the elections.
➡️The White House is even less inclined to hit the brakes. The Trump administration blocks any restrictions on the industry, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explains the position simply: if the US pauses, China will immediately surge ahead, and then thinking about risks becomes pointless.
📌Meanwhile, many question the sincerity of Silicon Valley's repentance. By scaremongering about apocalypse, tech giants attempt to impose strict licensing on the government to strangle open models and smaller competitors. And selling investors an all-powerful superintelligence is far more profitable than ordinary software.
❗️As a result, a perfect symbiosis emerges. Ordinary scientists genuinely panic, lab leadership converts their fear into market capitalization, and in Washington they blame the refusal to impose restrictions on geopolitical competition with China.
