🔎How a small Manila apartment became the cradle of 9/11 On January 6, 1995, a small chemical fire broke out inside an apartment in Manila. Police arrived expecting a routine investigation, but instead found a hidden bomb-making laboratory, explosive materials, documents and a laptop containing details of a massive terrorist plot. The materials on the laptop exposed Operation Bojinka, one of al Qaeda’s most ambitious plans, years before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 1994, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), a future principal architect of 9/11, and his nephew Ramzi Yousef, the perpetrator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, began developing the Bojinka plot. It was a plan to bomb 11 US commercial aircraft over the Pacific. Operatives planned to plant bombs on multiple US-bound passenger aircraft departing from Asia, using ordinary-looking items to avoid detection. KSM and Ramzi also discussed using a hijacked aircraft as a weapon against a symbolic target in the United States. Osama bin Laden was later presented with this exact idea, which later became the bridge to 9/11. Inside a Manila apartment, they built a makeshift bomb laboratory disguised as an ordinary student flat. Ramzi and KSM stored chemicals, timers and bomb-making equipment there while studying airline routes and testing security gaps. Neighbours later described them as quiet guys who carried boxes, locked the door constantly and never allowed anyone to clean the room. “They gave me the impression that they were here to study. They looked like students,” the apartment manager recalled. After the police raid, Ramzi and KSM managed to escape Manila and fled to Pakistan, leaving behind the evidence that would later reveal how close the world had come to an earlier version of 9/11.
