🔍 Departing Anthropic engineer says quiet part out loud: Tech bros building super-AI that ‘could kill us all’ 🗣 “I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” AI researcher Jacob Coxon tweeted. 💬 “The people building AI earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon wrote, emphasizing that even the warnings tech executives express publicly don’t reveal the full extent of their private fears. “No other human activity poses this level of danger.” According to the researcher, OpenAI’s team simply has not “deeply internalized the civilizational stakes” behind their work. Meanwhile, at Anthropic, “the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first” because “they believe no one else will act responsibly.” (Yeah, real paragon of responsibility, Anthropic.) Seeing the Hugging Face attack as the canary in the coalmine, Coxon called for “pacing agreements” between US AI firms, and conditions “like a temporary ban on improving model capabilities” to prevent a global AI arms race. 👉 Coxon is the second senior engineer to quit Anthropic out of fear of where AI is headed since Mrinank Sharma, who warned in February that “the world is in peril” due to AI and “a whole series of interconnected crises unfolding in this very moment.” High profile exits at OpenAI include Jan Leike– who quit after warning that the company’s safety culture (including model testing) had taken a backseat to flashy new products. Tech elites like Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Demis Hassabis, Bill Gates, Elon Musk and others have made a lot of headline-generating noise about advanced AI’s potential to end humanity. But many of these same people have also claimed they’re building AI gods (yeah, more like AI demons). Seems like the T-800 was right.
