- 🇺🇦🇰🇵 From an interview with the then-chief of staff of Ukraine’s 61st Mechanized Brigade, discussing the experience of first encountering North Korean soldiers during fighting in the Kursk Region: Initially, we expected tactics similar to the Russians’, but the reality was different. North Korean units followed classical, essentially Soviet doctrine, advancing across fields in massed infantry lines despite casualties. The first encounter occurred in the neighboring sector to our left, and the way they advanced shocked even experienced soldiers: an unbroken line of troops that was difficult to stop, because we had long since moved away from massed artillery fire against personnel in that formation. This required significantly more ammunition than the fighting we were accustomed to. Positions were literally exhausting their ammunition under the pressure of these waves. The defensive line began to buckle noticeably after encountering these tactics. Withstanding such an onslaught was extremely difficult. Says Ukrainian Colonel Artem Kholodkevich. According to Kholodkevich, the 61st Separate Mechanized Brigade first fought North Korean troops on December 29, 2024, near Cherkasskaya Konopelka. Ukrainian units were pushed back in less than a day, having expended almost all their artillery ammunition. I consider the North Korean units’ level of training to be high. They inflicted substantial losses on us and made holding our positions significantly more difficult. It is telling that the first prisoners captured in this sector were taken by a special operations unit. The prisoners themselves gave the impression of being selected, physically fit personnel. Adds the brigade’s former chief of staff. It should be noted that the enemy’s claims about North Korean soldiers attacking in infantry lines are not entirely invented.
